BBIO: Biosynthesis of RUBber from BIObased sources
Programme: HORIZON-JU-CBE-2025
Duration: 48 months, May 2026 – April 2030
Partners: Fundación AITIIP, C-source Renewables, Cranfield University, Celignis, The University of Edinburgh, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Tecnopackaging, Siec Badawcza Lukasiewicz, Artigo, Novex, Fundación Tekniker, Centrum Transferu Technologii – Innovations.
Objective: The RUBBIO project confronts the European Union’s strategic dependency on imported rubber by developing three novel, sustainable, and circular bio-based rubber value chains within Europe. By valorizing starch-containing food waste, the project will establish efficient biomanufacturing routes to transform these low-value stream into high-performance rubber polymers.
By integrating advanced biotechnology and chemical engineering, RUBBIO will deliver sustainable rubber alternatives for different key sectors, specifically targeting applications in technical flooring and footwear. These high-quality bio-based solutions will meet rigorous market standards while directly supporting circular economy and the EU’s transition toward decarbonization.
Tecnopackaging is a partner in RUBBIO, developing the polymerization of biobased monomers to obtain sustainable rubbers.
This project is supported by the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking and its members, and co-funded by the European Union under the GA nº101214822.
