CLEANALGAE2VALUE: Demonstrating a cost competitive, sustainable, scalable intensified micro-algae bioprocess for the production of food-grade medium value, carbon negative Ingredients exceeding Market Standards
Programa: HORIZON-JU-CBE-2024
Duración: 48 months, October 2025 – September 2029
Partners: SOLMEYEA (Coordinador), DTU, BBEPP, Chalmers, CNTA, KNOELL, CPI, EF, MAGFI, Tecnopackaging, DELTA, Bevo, Eroski y AUSOLAN
Objective: The main objective of CleanAlgae2Value is to overcome current limitations in microalgae exploitation by making them a more useful, sustainable, and affordable option for the food and packaging industries. To achieve this, the project works with white microalgae, which can offer ingredients that are easier to consume and more appealing than traditional algae, as they avoid issues such as intense green color, strong flavor, or low digestibility.
From these microalgae, high-value products such as proteins, Omega-3-rich oils, natural pigments, and starch will be developed, with applications in food and packaging.
The project will be carried out through three main goals:
- Create and commission a new microalgae biorefinery module (MABUM) within the SOLMEYEA pilot plant to improve the production process.
- Demonstrate the feasibility of producing sustainable ingredients from white microalgae more efficiently and at a lower cost, optimizing resource utilization and generating various valuable bioproducts.
- Validate these new ingredients in test products, ensure regulatory compliance, and facilitate their market entry, while also promoting consumer acceptance.
